Awards Banquet Slated for June 14

T

he annual Southern California NSP Awards Banquet is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, 2008, at the Kellogg West Center, on the Cal Poly Pomona Campus. The event will start promptly at 6PM.

Baldy is in the running for Patrol of the Year, so a big showing from our hill would be great. And besides that, we are one of the hosts this year and it's a great, fun event! So plan to come.

This year is a special year as we are honoring our fallen comrades. The theme for this year's banquet is "A Celebration of Life" in honor of the patrollers that have passed away this year and to celebrate the life they lived.

We are looking for a great turn-out this year, so please don't delay purchasing your ticket. For those of you who would like to extend the celebration, overnight accommodations may be reserved at the nearby Shilo Hotel (909) 598-0073.

Music will be provided by the infamous Dr. DJ Waller. Email your song requests and suggestions to skipatrol@gptag.mobi.

The Buffet Banquet will include your choice of Salmon, Steak or Vegetarian meals.

Tickets are available via PayPal for $41.50 or by check payable to "So Cal NSP" in the amount of $40. Mail your checks to: Gil Estrada 2206 W. Silver Tree Rd. Claremont, CA 91711.

Order tickets by visiting the 2008 Banquet page.

We are in need of raffle and door prizes. We also need 25 ski boots to be used as table decorations and pictures of patrollers at work and at play. If you can help with any of the above, contact Jeff Pierce at pierce_group@msn.com.

For more info contact: Jeff Pierce 909-626-374-2451; Don Harris 626-475-8273; Gil Estrada 909-247-8107.

M

y name is Hank Hammer. On Feb. 28, 2008 I had a terrible skiing accident at Mt. Baldy.

I was nearing the bottom of Goldridge when I hit ice, lost control and went sliding into a tree.

After 24 years of skiing - my luck had finally run out.

I'm not an expert, but as an "advanced" skier I could easily handle Bentley's Dream. But it seems like the stories of serious injuries and deaths usually occur on easier runs where you don't expect it. The same was true for me.

But my luck didn't run completely out because of the expert help I received from the Mt. Baldy ski patrol. They were very careful with me (I was paralyzed at the time) and took (they) every precaution to ensure my safety, even to the point of letting me wear a pair of glasses to protect my eyes on the ride down the chair to the ambulance.

Just to let you know, I broke three ribs and punctured my right lung.

Arrowhead Emergency inserted a chest tube which saved my life by draining out the blood in my lung and then reinflating it.

The ribs are going to have to heal on their own (nothing they can really do about them). They told me that it will be a very painful eight weeks.

Now that I am able to sit at a computer (for a short time) I just wanted to send you this email and let you know how grateful I am that your ski patrol was so terrific.

THANK YOU!
Hank Hammer
