Stage I: The Circle

  • Know where to sign in
    • Note shift change times
    • Note Patrol leader of the day
  • Know how to open, close and set-up chairs 1, 2, 3 & 4
    • Sign in locations
    • Rope placement
    • Evacuation gear
    • First aid supplies
    • Morning and evening sweep procedures
  • Skiing skills and proficiency
    • Typically ski groomed runs
  • Basic first aid skills
    • Have a stocked patrol belt
    • Practice primary and secondary assessments on location
    • Fill out accident reports
    • Practice knots i.e. Clovehitch, figure eight, bowline, water knot & Double Fishermen's

Stage II: The Square

  • Skiing skills and proficiency
    • Ski non-groomed runs
    • Toboggan handling-empty
    • Establish route selection, learn to secure, load patient in toboggan
  • First aid skills
    • Practice scenarios
      • Establish scene assessments and approach
      • 1st impression/mechanism of injury/complaints
      • How and when to call for toboggan
  • Mountain protocol
    • Understand what to do in care of an avalanche
      • Know the location of equipment
      • Organization of the search
      • Hasty search and probe line procedures

Stage III: The Diamond

  • Skiing skills and proficiency
    • Ski the entire mountain
    • Know the names of all runs
    • Practice loaded toboggan handling
      • Learn your limits with a toboggan
      • Communicate with partner and patient
      • Snowmobile transportation to patrol room
  • First aid skills
    • Practice scenarios
      • Multi injury accidents and triage
      • Life threatening situations
      • Hare traction splinting and backboarding
      • Medical emergencies
      • Special considerations for minors
  • Mountain protocol
    • Lift evacuation procedures
    • Helicopter evacuation procedures
    • lost skier procedures
    • Disaster management procedures

Stage IV: The Double Diamond

  • Attendance record
  • Ski and toboggan handling evaluation
  • First aid test
  • Schedule patrol days for the remainder of season
  • Order parka and party supplies
